Why I Believe We Are All Unique

I am different to every other therapist. Of course I am—because we are all different.

My studies in psychology have taught me a great deal about what we share as human beings. There are patterns in how we think, feel, and behave. We have common emotional needs, similar responses to stress, and shared ways of making sense of the world. These commonalities are important—they help us understand one another and feel less alone.

But alongside these similarities, I hold a strong belief: each of us is entirely individual and unique.

I often think of this like stars in the sky. From a distance, they may look similar—small points of light scattered across the same vast space. But each star has its own composition, brightness, lifespan, and story. No two are exactly alike. Or like snowflakes—formed under similar conditions, yet each one carries a pattern that will never be repeated.

Even identical twins, who share genetics and often grow up in the same environment, can experience the world in completely different ways. Studies have shown that twins can respond very differently to the same event—such as a car accident—because of their individual perceptions, personalities, and internal worlds. This highlights something essential: it is not just what happens to us, but how we uniquely experience it that shapes who we are.

This belief deeply informs how I work as a therapist.

I do not see myself as the expert on you. How could I be? As two entirely unique individuals, I can never fully know what it is like to live your life, to carry your experiences, or to see the world through your eyes. Because of that, I do not give advice or tell you what you “should” do.

Instead, I offer something different.

I offer a space where you can be heard and understood. I bring empathy, curiosity, and respect for your individuality. I walk alongside you as you explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. At times, I may gently challenge you—not to direct you, but to help you reflect and discover what feels right for you.

Therapy, in this sense, is not about being told who to be or what to do. It is about uncovering your own answers, in a way that honours who you are as a unique individual.

Because just like no two stars or snowflakes are the same, there has never been—and will never be—another you.
